We need to explain what mics, pres, processing, and gadgets we have up front.
When you see those gadgets listed later, come back here as a reference, if needed.

MICROPHONES

MIC Brief Description Uses on this session
The Neumann U87AI is a really nice multi-pattern, large diaphragm condenser mic that sounds good on just about anything. It has a very pronounced midrange, which makes ideal for vocals that need to cut through the mix. Sometimes, too much of that "87 sound" can be a bad thing, though. Chris' lead vocal(cardioid), Marshall Guitar Cab(cardioid), Drum Room Mic (omni). Tambourine.
The Neumann TLM170r is a fantastic multi-pattern, large diaphragm condenser mic that excels in almost every application. It has an extremely smooth frequency response and a glorious top end that is never pinched. Mack Damon loves it. Not used on this session.
The Neumann TLM103 is a solid large diaphragm condenser mic with a fixed cardioid pattern. This mic could be the cheapest large diaphragm condenser you can buy with the Neumann name on it. We have a sequentially numbered matched stereo pair. HiWatt Guitar Cabs, Stereo Leslie 122 Bottom, Stereo background vocals.
The Neumann KM184 is a beautiful small diaphragm condenser mic with a fixed cardioid pattern. This mic has a very even frequency response and excellent transient response as well. We have a sequentially numbered matched stereo pair. Stereo Drum Overheads, Stereo Leslie 122 Top.
The Neumann KM84 is a beautiful small diaphragm condenser mic with a fixed cardioid pattern. This mic has a very crisp and even frequency response and excellent transient response. Hi-Hat. Yup, that's it.
The AKG C414 B-ULS is a studio standard multi-pattern, large diaphragm condenser mic thatworks on just about anything. To my ears, these mics are so flat, they sound "plain". Not one of my personal faves, but a staple for every serious studio. Snare Drum Top & Bottom (hyper-cardioid, -20db pad engaged)
The AKG C3000 is a large diaphragm condenser mic with a cardioid and hyper-cardioid pattern. A decent mic for solid sound on a modest budget, they work well in a variety of situations. We have a matched stereo pair. Not used on this session.
The Audix D2 is a dynamic mic suited for tuned drums. They work great on toms, but even better on congas, bongos, and timbales. Toms, and at one point a talkback.

The EV RE-20 is a dynamic mic with a unique vented design that significantly reduces proximity effect. Commonly used for VO, it makes a most excellent kick drum mic.

That's Mr. Kick Drum to you.
The Sennheiser MD421 is a dynamic mic with a unique variable rolloff feature. Commonly used for VO, it makes a most excellent kick drum or tom mic. The 421 is also a fantastic choice for BIG FAT guitar cab tone.

Toms, HiWatt and Marshall Cabs. Bass Cab.
The Beyer M69TG is a classic dynamic that is used by many pros in the studios for vocals. Anything a 57 can do, the 68 can usually do better. Cabs, drums, you name it. Not used on this session.
The SE Electronics SE3600 is a large diaphragm FET condenser with a fixed cardioid pattern. Excellent on so many things, it has a warm low-mid and a smooth top. Not used on this session.
(we got them a week later)
The SE Electronics SE1's are small-diaphragm condensers suited for transient material (percussion, cymbals, overheads, acoustic guitars). These mics have a fixed cardioid pattern. We have a stereo matched pair. Not used on this session.

The Shure Beta 57 is a dynamic mic workhorse. It has a pronounced presence curve that gives it an excellent "bite" on certain guitar and drums sounds. Marshall guitar cabs, studio listenback.
If you have to go direct, the Countryman & Associates type 85 DI is the only way to go. They'll save your life! Bass Guitar DI

PRES

Model
Description
Uses on this session
API 3124 4 channel API pre based on the original API 312 Class A preamp from the API console. These pres can best be described as fat and punchy. Rack & Floor Toms, Bass Cab
Chandler LTD-1 Rebuilt 1073 channel strip from the original Neve 80x8 consoles that are famous for their tone. This is a pre/EQ with a DI built in. The sound is BIG and creamy, all Class A discrete. We have a stereo matched pair, consecutive serials. Kick, Snare, Lead Vox, Guitars (cab & DI)
Avalon AD2022 Based on the famed M5 preampllifier, this stereo pre has variable impedance and DI features. Not to be confused with the 737, this is an all discrete, all Class A box. The sound is as transparent as air. No coloration, lightning fast transient response. The closest you'll get to being there. Drum room mic, stereo backround vocals, shakers, tambourine.
Focusrite Red One Somewhere between API and Neve land lies the tone of the Red Range Pre. Designed by Rupert Neve for the famed ISA consoles, these pres are thick, punchy, and smooth as glass out to dog hearing ranges. Snare Drum Bottom, Hats, Stereo Drum Overheads, Hammond Top & Bottom Stereo.
Control 24 Pre These pres are based on the focusrite platinum range. Class A and very smooth, with a little punch in the low mid. The best in-console pres I've heard in a board under $50K Listenback
ART Dual MP Trash can suprise. The ARTs are very plain sounding, that is until you push the input trim in to clipping; then you get wonderful warm fuzzy sound. The starved plate sound certainly has its uses. Guitar Cab & Sx Vocal.
